A striking pair of vintage Art Deco dress clips featuring sculpted gold tone seahorses set against glossy black galalith curved panels. This iconic marine motif is associated with the celebrated French filmmaker and designer Jean Painlevé, whose seahorse (“Hippocampe”) designs became popular in Paris during the 1930s.
Painlevé’s fascination with marine life — particularly seahorses — inspired a small range of jewellery and accessories produced during the mid-1930s Art Deco period. These bold clips reflect that distinctive aesthetic, combining sculptural marine imagery with strong geometric forms and contrasting materials.
